The first month of the new semester is coming to a close as the semster ramps up to the grind we've all so dearly missed. While the stresses of university life may fluctuate, you can alweays take sollace in the consistency at which the CompE newsletter serves you events to go to!

1) Ada's Team Mentoring Program: Mentors and Organizers Needed

WHO: Anyone interested in working for the embetterment of high school students
WHEN: Application Deadline: February 15th

WHAT: Are you passionate about meeting others? Guiding younger students? Solving problems through collaboration and having fun? Maybe you're just a computer science guru who wants to pass on your knowledge! Disclaimer: guru certification or advanced computer knowledge not required. Ada's Team has an opportunity for you that would be a killer on resume!

Ada's Team is organizing a mentorship program to help guide the next generation of STEM leaders! We will be partnering with high school students from across the greater Edmonton area focusing on underserved communities, gendered inequalities, etc.
With your help, we hope to empower students to reach their full potential and pursue a higher education with an emphasis in computing science.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the following roles:

  1. organize the events
  2. mentor students

Organizers will help Ada's Team executives plan the logistics of the event while mentors will work directly with a high school mentees and provide individual guidance.

2) JUMP presents: Breaking & Entering, Security 101

WHO: Students who want to a more human perspective of their proffessors
WHEN: February 5th @ 5:30pm - 8:00pm
WHERE: Jobber HQ
WHAT: Security and Privacy concerns are everywhere!
Regardless of what discipline you are studying or what roles you are eyeing for the future, some knowledge about security and privacy is important. These topics are so large and wide ranging, that getting some answers without feeling lost can at times be challenging.

Join us for a series of short talks on Security and Privacy on February 5th at Jobber HQ.

You'll learn some important security terms you can impress your friends with, as well as the security essentials that everyone should know about. We'll also talk about the reasons why you should always thank your network admin, and of course, we'll have a live legal hacking session!

3) LEED Green Associate Training

WHO: Anyone interested in the GA accredidation
WHEN: February 8th @ 1:00PM - 5:00PM
WHERE: SUB, The Orion Room, Register Here
WHAT: ad your resume with the LEED Green Associate, the only professional designation to show employers and clients you have certified knowledge in the field. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. Buildings can become LEED Certified as can people!

To date, this course and its materials have proven to be instrumental in helping over 9000 students pass their respective exam at a 99% pass rate. This course is offered at a quarter of the price and time as the competition and allows students to graduate with letters after their name!

4) Professors of the UofA: An Interview Series

WHO: Students who want to a more human perspective of their proffessors

WHAT: Professors of UofA is a social project to shed light on the lives of some of our most interesting professors. Whether you're looking for a good read, nervous about starting first year, contemplating taking a class by a professor whom you've never met, searching for a thesis advisor, or just looking for a good laugh, these interviews are a must-read!

5) Google Careers: Hiring Now!

WHAT: If you're interested in the ever profitable industry of harvesting data, now is your chance to work for the corporate megolith that is Google. In all seriousness, Google is hiring in a variety of positions, and you should really check them out! All the information can be found on [https://careers.google.com/students/], but here is a posting they are promoting specifically:

Google Hardware Engineer and Mechanical Engineer Summer and Fall Internships
Application opens on Friday, Dec 6th and closes on Tuesday, January 31st
There are two possible applications: Hardware Engineer and Mechanical Engineer. These applications are for both the summer internship and fall co-ops.

6) Leaders Prize Competition

WHO: Anyone interested in Aritificial Intelligence and Hackathons
WHEN: June 19th 2019
WHERE: Here
WHAT: Misinformation is rampant no matter where you look on the internet. Fact checkers and reputable news sources were a sufficient solution to keep well informed in the past, but this wave of fake news challenges that tradition. The Schulich Foundation invites you to tackle this problem with AI. Groups of up to 5 people are tasked with creating an AI that can evaluate the validity of the statement, and if possible, provide evidence. The winning team will claim the $1 milllion prize! This is a great experience to undertake. The competition is far off now, but it definatly worth your consideration!
