CompE Club Weekly

Being the third week of classes, I'm sure your profs have begun easing you into your assignments for this semester. Most likely they've all dumped everything on you at once, or will be doing so this next week. But fret not! Your weekly update is here to help you micromanage your spare time with cool computer-y stuff!

1) CompE 2020 AGM

WHO: Anyone interesting in the CompE club or being a CompE exec

WHAT: The Computer Engineering Club is holding it's AGM this Friday. If you're interesting in running for a position, or want to practice your right to vote, we encourage you to come! There are a slew of positions to fill and you could have one! Moreover, it is a good opportunity to learn what's in store, and ask any questions you may have. Click here for more information

2) Intuit Virtual Info Session

WHO: Anyone seeking a 2021 Co-op, or interested in a career in Intuit
WHEN: Tuesday September 15th @ 4PM MST
WHERE: Sign up here
WHAT: Intuit is hosting a virtual info session to show what a career at Intuit looks like. The meeting will also demonstrate how to set yourself up for success, covering resume prep, networking skills, and interview skills. Inuit is currently seeking Winter 2021 Co-op roles in Software Development, Tax and UX Design. 3) Get a JUMP on Your Career

WHO: For post-secondary students
WHEN: Wednesday, September 16th at 5:00pm to 6:30pm.
WHERE: APPLY HERE The individual Zoom link for the event will be emailed out the day before the event.
WHAT: Description of Event from Talent Attraction Manager at Jobber: Come hear from our Talent Attraction team on how to structure a resume as a student or new grad, hear from a panel of hiring managers about what they look for in students and the skills you should work on now, and hear from current and previous students who worked at Jobber about their experience of jumping from curriculum to career!
What will I learn? We can’t promise to get you a job, but we can promise that you’ll take tangible information away to best set you up for success as you find your next (or first!) Co-Op/Internship opportunity.

4) ECE Trivia Night

WHO: Anyone in ECE who likes trivia and/or prizes
WHEN: Thursday September 24th @ 6PM-7PM MST
WHERE: ECE Discord
WHAT: Do you know things? Do you want to win prizes for knowing said things? Do you want to chill with some ECE peeps? All that and more next Thursday on the ECE Discord. Flex that knowledge and come have a good time.

5) Call for Mentors

WHO: Anyone in who wants to help mentor
WHERE: Sign Up Form
WHAT: There have been a lot of applicants for people who would like to be mentored, which is good to see. However, this means we need more mentors to help ensure nobody is over-burdened. This is a great resume builder, as well as a chance to share your knowledge, experience, and advice with this incoming group of first and second year students, especially when many of our usual interactions are gone due to remote learning. Here is the link to the sign up form, and feel free to share this with friends or anyone you know who may be interested.

6) Intuit Coffee Breaks

WHO: Anyone interested in seeking a career in Intuit
WHEN: Sept 21st 2020 @ 11:00AM MST - Coffee w/ Intuit Engineers

WHERE: The sessions are held on Zoom, RSVP using the forms above. Zoom links will be sent 48 hours before the event
WHAT: Intuit is hosting even more virtual info sessions to to answer all your questions about Intuit work culture. These sessions are structured more as a casual Q&A session. There are three sessions, each with people working in different roles within the company. If there are any burning questions you want answered, or if you just feel like lurking and absorbing useful information through osmosis, now is your chance. 7) AI4Society online sessions

WHO: For post-secondary students
WHEN: Friday, September 25th 9:00 to 10:00 am: Introduction: AI4Society, a Signature Research Area
Friday, September 25th 3:00 to 4:15 pm: Our University, Our Work: Artificial Intelligence Around Campus

WHAT: AI4Society is hosting two webinar sessions on September 25th
Description: Come and discover AI4Society, UofA's newest Signature Research Area on artificial intelligence and its applications. We are hosting two online events on September 25th, one to introduce AI4Society and collaboratories, and another to feature research on artificial intelligence and machine learning around campus.

8) UofA CompE Club x McGill BOLT Virtual bootcamp

WHO: Teams of 4-5 University Students, preferably with programming experience
WHEN: Saturday, September 26, 2020 ~ Saturday October 3rd, 2020, Application due by Wednesday Sept 23rd @ 11:59PM EST

WHAT: The Evolution of Education from Sept 26 - Oct 3! A unique combination of a hackathon and a case competition, the event brings together Canadian management and STEM students to developing innovative education technology solutions. With just one week’s time commitment, students will learn about design thinking, power applications, product management and UI/UX design through workshops, and develop an impactful project to pitch to renowned corporate sponsors. There will also be a participant-exclusive networking session with recruiters from top tech firms. FB EVENT LINK
University students from ALL across Canada and supported by Microsoft, Google, Agorize, MTL CoWork, HP, Duolingo, Korbit AI, etc. Apply individually or in teams of 4-5 students. Each team must include at least one business student and one STEM student. While not required, it is highly encouraged that at least one team member has programming knowledge.

9) UA-WISE/WISEWR Mentorship Program

WHO: Undergrads, Grads, or people with less than 5 years professional experience
WHEN: Application deadline: September 30th 2020

WHAT: UA-WiSE (Women in Science & Engineering) and WISER (Women in Science, Engineering, & Research) are hosting a mentorship program for undergraduate and graduate students. Our program aims to connect underrepresented individuals with mentors who can help to foster professional development and personal discovery. Our program consists of a unique trio format and 3 virtual events. The trio consists of an undergraduate, early career professional / graduate, and experienced mentor. This year applicants will get to tell us exactly which mentors they would be interested in. Check out all of the mentor bios here.

11) NeuroNexus Design Competition

WHO: Anyone interested hackathons and neuroscience

WHAT: Neuro Nexus is a hackathon program designed to spark collaboration across disciplines and tackle complex challenges in brain science and mental health. The program connects experts in frontline, clinical, and academic practice with motivated, talented students to develop technological solutions
over a fast-paced 6 week competition. This year, Neuro Nexus will facilitate 40+ projects across the province in their largest competition yet.

12) ComIT .NET Core Course

WHO: Anyone interested in furthering their programming skillset
WHERE: The ComIT website
WHAT: ComIT is offering courses to students looking to take charge of their education. The programs offer 3-month part time courses for people looking to pursue a career in IT. The expected workload is about 8 hours per week, and will teach coding in various languages such as Java, React, .Net among others. It will also involve the often neglected soft skills. Students who graduate will recieve assistance in the job search. The course if covered by a scholarship, and will be offered free of charge.
